General
Central Day School admits students of any religion, race, color
and national or ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs
and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the
school. CDS does not discriminate on the basis of race, color and
national or ethnic origin in administration of its educational
policies, athletic and other school-administered programs. Children
must be five years old on or before May 31 to enter Kindergarten. All
new applicants will be evaluated based on entrance test scores,
previous achievement test scores, previous report card and conduct
grades, a personal interview and a recommendation from the previous
school. Central Day School reserves the right to refuse admission to
any student it determines would benefit more from another school
setting based on educational, emotional, behavioral or physical needs.
Kindergarten
Our desire at Central Day School is for children to flourish in
their educational journey. It is most important that they receive an
excellent beginning in kindergarten. There are a number of areas that
are vital in a child’s development to ensure they are ready for a
challenging kindergarten program. It is critical that a child’s
scholastic, mental, emotional and social levels all be ready to
participate in the structure of the kindergarten classroom. Based on
this philosophy, we evaluate all applicants for kindergarten in these
areas. Also, all applicants for kindergarten must be 5 years old on
or before May 31st . It is our belief if a
child is subjected too early in their development to challenges beyond
their maturity, he/she is much more likely to face difficulty in
kindergarten, or not be able to achieve all they could in later years
because of being less mature than their classmates. This can even carry
over into college. Too often, students leave high school and go off to
college without the maturity level necessary to deal with the
challenges that are there. A decision made early in their life to allow
children to mature at their own pace, as opposed as moving forward due
to a calendar, will serve them well throughout their life.
In order to ensure each child the opportunity to excel, Central Day
School’s procedure for acceptance for kindergarten applicants will be
as follows:
1. Children must be 5 years old on or before May 31st. This is the
normal acceptance date for most local private schools.
2. We will interview and evaluate all applicants.
3. We will request a recommendation from the applicant’s preschool teacher.
